Why does The Sims have such a huge female demographic compared to most games?

The Sims is the only game I can think of where you can search a video on YouTube and more often than not the person speaking will be a woman. As much as gaming has branched out and female gamers are a lot more common these days, they're still typically in the minority. But with The Sims it really does feel like most players are women, or at least half of them. What's the secret sauce of The Sims to be able to overcome this gender barrier in a way that is unlike most games on the market?

There have been numerous reports that free-form games without hard goals and competition have had a better time attracting females -- The Sims and SimCity both do very well with women. Obviously, that's a broad generalization -- different women like different types of games, just like men -- but with the limited number of high-profile games offering that type of gameplay compared to the countless number offering goal-oriented and competitive gameplay , games like The Sims have cornered the market for that particular demographic.

Add to that the themes and aesthetics of the games: while countless games offer soldiers, urban criminals, aliens, elves, and such, not many offer a dramatized version of domestic everyday life, so, once again, they've cornered the market for the demographic that isn't as interested in fanastical worlds and action-oriented conflict. While women who like high fantasy settings or wartime settings have lots of options to choose from, those who prefer melodramatic domestic settings are probably playing The Sims.

And, lastly, a lot of other mainstream games are explicitly marketed to males, and while that doesn't preclude women from also playing, such games aren't going out of their way to appeal to them. The Sims, on the other hand, has always been aware of their female player base, and thus have never positioned the game as a "boys club" type of game.

There have been numerous reports that free-form games without hard goals and competition have had a better time attracting females. Related to your last point, there's the fact that most games don't allow for women to "put themselves into the game" like they do for men.

While this trend has been steadily falling, it's hard to overlook the fact that most protagonists - certainly the majority of default protagonists - are white men.

The Sims has no default Hero character and that probably appeals to a lot of women who like to "roleplay" as versions of themselves.

Edit: I really wish people would stop assuming I said things I haven't. I mentioned "white male" not to make it a race issue but to say there's a shit ton of variation of humanity that isn't "white male" female, queer, gay, black, Hispanic, etc.

Additionally, I never said anyone was incapable of empathizing with anyone else based on certain physical traits, and frankly acting like I did say that is a blatant twisting of the argument and is equally unempathizing.

I put this in two of my posts here, since both are drawing the same replies. The Sims not having a default character could have some small factor, but I doubt it's a significant factor.

If you control for this one variable, it won't account for the huge difference in popularity between the Sims vs. There's something about Sims gameplay that has broader appeal than those games. Maybe because it's a digital version of "playing house" that so many people had grown up with as toddlers, either through nature or nurture. Is that a factor? If anything, I prefer to play something else than what I am in daily life. And most people do, or Papers Please would be the biggest hit in PC gaming of the last three centuries.

You might find that to be the case. I might find that to be the case, too. But not everyone does, and that's okay. Everyone is different. I always make myself a girl when i have the choice. In rust I'm a black man though, which is funny to me.

It doesn't bother me though, as I'm used to playing as a guy in games. If you want to see a bit of why it can be off-putting though, look at the steam comments for rust when a bunch of male players were made women. The level of rage is insane. You might think it doesn't, but that's only cause its always been in your favour. But I guess thats like most privilege. I Rust I'm female. I have not detected any noticeable difference in the way I'm killed on sight.

Everyone gets killed on sight regardless of gender or race. There's a lot of equality in that regard, it's a very progressive game. I don't think that is the only reason for the outrage. A crucial element in games over other media is choice and player agency.

Removing avenues for player choices is not going to go down well with just about any game. Look at the outcry at the ending for Mass Effect 3, for instance. The controversy caused by the negative perception of 'social justice' is the icing on the cake in this instance imo. The devs did, however, state that randomness spawn randomness included was a core part of the game play as a realistic survival game or whatever. So the rage is unfounded imo, they got what they paid for.

I think it's an interesting choice. That doesn't mean that players have to like it. Or even that it is good game design. They have eliminated a large part of the metagame involved with player perception and relationships within the game by denying players the chance to roleplay different strategies.

Does every game have to stretch their targeted demographic to include as large a set as possible, even compromising on game vision to do so? Sometimes I feel like a disturbing number of people would answer yes.

But the fact is, there are a metric fuck-ton of gamers nowadays and you can find a happy and profitable medium between catering to everyone and holding steady with your vision. Japanese games do not allow for choice, they don't try to cater to every choice the player can potentially make, and they don't try to make millions of different scenarios for every little choice there can be.

The result is solid games with solid stories, but linear and somehow limited in scope, as opposed to skyrim. Tons of guys play Mass Effect as FemShep. It's extremely common to assume many people do the irrational thing you don't do. It comes up in court cases against advertisers a lot "I'm not deceived by the ad, but most people probably would be deceived by it, so issue that cease and desist order, FCC.

If it helps, I very much prefer to play as a character that resembles me more. If I don't have the choice to be a female it does immediately bring down my enjoyment a notch. What about when the character would be changed if they were another gender? I think it's definitely justifiable for a character to be a certain gender for story reasons. I played as FemShep. It helped me distance myself from the character and actually role-play within the limited confines of the game.

That's a lot of male Shepards, for sure. How many of those players are males? I wish we had more details, to be honest. That figure seems very high. Did the survey account for players who used both characters? And if so, did it allow answers such as "both, but male more often"?

I also have the feeling that Tumblr users are mostly female in the ME fandom anyway but that's just a vague feeling. Yeah, I'm a black dude and playing a white character or female character doesn't impact my enjoyment on a game at all. In fact, I tend to pick white female characters when I can. I've seen enough people reacting to male choosing female protagonist to think it is something that is present. It's not really a visible issue, it's more something present in the background.

Sure, maybe you split evenly when you get to choose your gender in a game. Wouldn't you feel like the industry is sending you the message that you're not the target audience for their games? EDIT: This comment was meant more in response to some of the replies to your comment which were to the effect of "I like playing a female character in RPGs, so I don't get why women would find it easier to identify with games that allow you to choose your gender". Isn't it incredibly insulting to say "You're only able to enjoy the game if there are characters specifically crafted for you" to an entire demographic?

If someone can't enjoy a game because their character doesn't look and act like them, that doesn't show the game lacks inclusion - it shows that the player lacks empathy and imagination. That's what is silently implied by the SJW arguments whenever there are calls for more inclusion in games. The argument usually follows this logic:.

If cis white males can empathize with an Orc or Turian character, why do race gender gamers need a character designed to look like them unless they're unable to empathize with anything else?

As with many things in social change, it's virtue signalling. Even if the character never gets used it doesn't matter. It's only there so that everybody can see how progressive and inclusive you are. That's what I hear silently implied by the SJW arguments whenever there are calls for more inclusion in games.

If cis white males can enjoy a Dwarf or Orc character, why do race gender gamers need a character designed to look like them Because it's tone policing. If I walked into a book club and interrupted the discussion to demand an arbitrary change for my sake, I'd be very quickly told to sit down or get out.

In fact they'll even use it as proof that they need to get their way. I'll agree with you there - there is definitely some merit to having this discussion about gender, but I think it's being done in a very toxic way that is just reinforcing the negative stereotypes of both SJWs and gamers between each other.

Played 65 times. Install Steam. A lot of that has to do with the fact that these groups aren't involved in the decision making process in creating games, and that's a whole separate problem. This is going to do a lot to bring in a broader audience. Now that's way more useful.

Because as a little girl, that's mostly what I'd play with, and he always tried to sims me to play video games in order for us to bond more and to keep me out of trouble games it was sort of a fail. The core issue here is that whether the term "gamer" means enthusiast or not, it's common enough that people are trying to establish it as having that association, and people keep pushing back girls it, like you are here, where the only intent seems to tell about a personal bias. After a while, I realize the slow down came from a big fire in the yard caused by poor BBQ handling and the two males in the family were dead.

Lying games yourself about it or refusing to ask and answer the girls questions won't change reality. One, is that LoL is one of the most popular games on the competitive scene, and while I haven't played it, apparently has a curve to it that doesn't really make it a casual game. I'll agree with that, all the talk surrounding GamerGate certainly has proven that the conversation doesn't actually shut down. Sims a silly stereotype.
